Now gingerbread’s origins are the perfect mix of world cuisine culture meets homegrown nostalgia. The rising influence of a buoyant spice trade in medieval Britain was responsible for spices like ginger, cinnamon and cloves becoming not simply the currency of the era, but the all-important status symbols of well-heeled nobles, merchants and royalty.
Pressed gingerbread men was actually a trend created back in the court of Queen Elizabeth 1, who was quite insistent that fresh ‘man cookies’ were baked in the likeness of visiting dignitaries.
Today, you could choose to busy yourself in the kitchens creating edible mini manikins of friends and family OR instead settle for filling a bowl or two with Popcorn Kitchen’s latest flavour, a magnificently munchy tribute to the festive season’s lightly spiced, biscuit people.
According to Popcorn Kitchen spokesperson, ‘Having historically tapped into the public’s favourite great cake and ‘pud’ memories, we felt now was the moment was ripe to delve deep within the biscuit barrel.’
