The board announced the decision on Monday, describing Hamza as a “high-potential leader” equipped with a modern vision for the business as it prepares for its next phase of growth.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the board said: “Hamza has demonstrated maturity, discipline and strategic thinking far beyond his age. His understanding of day-to-day operations and his commitment to modernising the business made this appointment the natural next step.”

Hamza has been involved in various aspects of the supermarket’s internal operations over the past several years. Colleagues say he has worked across inventory management, staff coordination, supplier relationships and early digital-expansion planning.

Speaking shortly after the appointment, Hamza said he is focused on building on the supermarket’s established reputation while pushing forward with improvements designed to meet modern retail expectations.

“This role is a huge responsibility, and I’m grateful for the trust placed in me,” he said.

“Abu Bakr Supermarket has spent years serving the community with quality, consistency and care. My goal is to strengthen that foundation while introducing changes that make the business more efficient and future-ready.”

“Customers expect speed, convenience and reliability. We need smarter systems, better technology and a more unified workflow to deliver that every day.”

Abu Bakr Supermarket has served Yorkshire for more than a decade and built a reputation as a reliable and community-focused retailer. The appointment of such a young managing director represents a fresh strategic direction — one that blends long-standing values with modern ambition.

The board confirmed that several upcoming projects are already in the early planning stages, including operational upgrades and potential expansion initiatives. However, further details are expected to be released later this year.

Reflecting on his new role, Hamza said: “This is only the beginning. There’s a lot of work to do, and I’m ready for it. My focus is on building a stronger, more efficient and more forward-thinking business for the future.”
